Event Description
This introductory course on lighting controls provides attendees a practical guide to common lighting control components found in commercial lighting systems. The class will introduce how to use controls to reduce energy consumption of lighting by automating switching and dimming when light is not required. We'll discuss devices such as sensors that detect occupancy or daylight as well as scheduling and other programmed responses. We will emphasize the role of lighting control devices in commercial building systems, the practical application of these devices in building spaces, and the steps required to ensure that these devices deliver on their promise and function successfully.
The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:
- Role of lighting controls
- Basic control types and how they function
- Early design decision points
- Common lighting control strategies and technologies
- Lighting commissioning process
James Donson is an energy engineer working for a federal subcontractor in Golden, Colorado. James has spent the last 14 years performing energy audits, retro-commissioning studies, lighting consulting, commissioning services, and energy consumption-related research in commercial buildings across North America. James is a licensed mechanical engineer in Colorado, a registered Building Energy Assessment Professional with ASHRAE, and has an LC from the NCQLP.
