Event Description
From inspecting existing systems to planning and installing future all-electric energy upgrades, this course will cover the many options and strategies for cost-effective home electrification retrofits. First, this course will explain the importance of inspecting and testing a home to determine an electrified plan of action. Every home, and homeowner, may have different needs thus the electrification retrofit priorities vary. Next we’ll highlight affordable electric solutions such as 120 V ductless heat pumps, and heat pump water heaters, including 120 V models. This course will also explore emerging electrification technologies solutions that offer creative solutions, such as a 120 V washer-dryer combo units that enable freeing up an electric dryer plug for EV charging or a heat pump water heater. Lastly, the presentation will cover the cost of conventional gas appliances versus electric heat pump appliances to show that electric heat pump appliances are more cost-effective to operate.
The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the importance of home specific retrofit plans
- List at least 3 or more 120 V products that are available now and how they can significantly make is easier and less expensive to do a retrofit
- Describe examples of upgrade paths that open the door to other cost-effective upgrades
- Discuss and compare the operating costs of gas versus electricity powering heat pumps
- Importance of home specific retrofit plans (testing and home inspection data + homeowner priorities)
- 120 V ductless heat pumps
- Heat pump water heater including 120 V models
- 120 V washer-dryer combo units
- Freeing up 240 V circuits for better purposes
- Operating costs gas versus electricity powering heat pumps
- Class survey, closing and wrap up
Edward Louie works at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. There he works on research projects around residential energy efficiency with a focus on heat pump, heat pump water heaters, quality installation documentation workflows, and cost-effective retrofits that fix existing building science problems so that the same problems won’t repeat themselves years down the road. Prior to PNNL Edward worked as an above code energy efficiency program verifier. During his time as a verifier, he inspected and tested over 600 homes.
