UDC Green Roof Tours: July 20, August 17, September 21, Washington, DC
Event Description
The College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES), of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), invites you to tour our Green Roof; hear more about sustainable agriculture from our Master Gardener Program Coordinator, Sandy Farber Bandier; and learn about green roof design from David Bell, of BELL Architects.
The roof of the Van Ness Urban Food Hub showcases four types of production: (1) high-revenue plants (e.g., herbs, greens); (2) high-nutrition plants that can cover the entire range of dietary needs (e.g., tomatoes, peppers, chards, cabbages); (3) pollinator plants that ensure bee health in our urban environment; and (4) low-maintenance plants that help capture rain, reduce runoff, cool buildings in the summer, and provide insulation in the winter. In addition to food production, the Green Roof is also used to conduct research on plant varieties that thrive in roof environments.
Join an upcoming tour to view the Green Roof and gain knowledge from experts.
Tours are free, but tickets are limited. Remaining Summer/September Dates:
- Saturday, July 20, 2019
- Saturday, August 17, 2019
- Saturday, September 21, 2019
