Event Description
Join us for the USGBC Virtual Town Hall Workshop: Newark, NJ
Measuring Resilience with RELi
GBCI Credit: 1.0 CE hours (LEED-specific BD+C and ND)
Basic level (Note: This workshop is for those already familiar and experienced with LEED. Focus is on resilience in the built environment.)
Description:
Around the world, governments, businesses, private developers and city planners and officials are spearheading a growing movement to make structures and communities more resilient through improved preventative action. The increasing frequency of dramatic weather events has brought an even greater urgency to create buildings and communities that are better adapted to a changing climate and better able to bounce back from disturbances and interruptions.
RELi is a rating system and leadership standard that takes a holistic approach to resilient design. It is used by companies, developers, city planners, architects, bond insurers and more to assess and plan for all of the acute hazards that buildings and communities can face during unplanned events, prepare to mitigate against these hazards and design and construct buildings to maintain critical life-saving services in the event of extended loss of power, heating fuel or water.
This new workshop shows how RELi measures resilience in buildings, cities and communities and expands upon LEED to embrace resilience strategies that are climate adaptive. RELi’s comprehensive approach lays the groundwork for resilient, regenerative and healthy outcomes that support quality of life.
The workshop will begin with an overview of why resilience matters. The scientific evidence that clearly suggests the Earth’s climate will continue to change even under the most aggressive emission reduction scenarios. The decisions we make about how to design, build, and operate buildings, communities, and cities have important consequences and will determine the severity of climate impacts. LEED v4.1 is already driving the built environment to higher levels of holistic sustainability performance and LEED v4.1 BD+C certification recognizes buildings designed for leadership. RELi builds upon these measures to certify resilience in all aspects of your project.
Then we will explore all of the key concepts, strategies and approaches to RELi. Subjects such as Hazard Preparedness, Hazard Adaptation, Social Cohesion, Local Economics and Equity will be defined. The workshop will explore the connection between LEED resilience credits and RELi requirements. Then the RELi certification process will be explained.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify need for Resilience in the built environment
- Describe the components of RELi
- Recognize how RELI helps increase resilience in buildings and communities
- Articulate the benefits of RELi certification
- Summarize how to certify an RELi project with GBCI
