Event Description

SouthCoast Community Energy Series:
Building the SouthCoast's Clean Energy Future

Wednesday, June 29, 2016 from 6 - 7:30 PM

Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School
1121 Ashley Boulevard
New Bedford, MA

The Marion Institute, Leadership SouthCoast, SouthCoast Media Group, Toxics Action Center, and Acadia Center invite you to a free public forum to learn about how energy decisions affect your wallet, your health, and your community. The forum will feature a panel discussion examining the current energy landscape, energy challenges affecting the region, and clean energy alternatives for the SouthCoast.

Massachusetts and the SouthCoast are facing critical decisions about their energy future. The Legislature is considering bills that could shape the state’s clean energy future and the Global Warming Solutions Act requires the state to reduce its carbon emissions. Large power plants are closing and new, clean energy technologies are emerging. What are the implications for the SouthCoast? These decisions are being made right now and there are projects happening in your community that affect us all. You have a role to play in these decisions.

Panelists:
Claire Miller, Lead Community Organizer (Toxics Action Center)
Roger Cabral, Organizer (South Coast Neighbors United)
Peter Shattuck, Director Clean Energy Initiative and Massachusetts Office (Acadia Center)
Janet Milkman, Executive Director (Marion Institute)

Select topics will include: an overview of the current energy system and how it works; a highlight of local efforts to combat pipelines; an explanation of the Attorney General's Natural Gas Report and Acadia Center's EnergyVision outlining a pathway for creating a safer, cleaner and more affordable energy system without additional pipelines; and local opportunities to reduce energy usage. The discussion will be followed by a question and comment period with the audience about how to build this clean energy future in SouthCoast and beyond.
