PASSIVHAUS MASTERCLASS: Getting to Net Zero (Now Online), April 28, London, UK

The increased focus on the Climate Emergency has led to a stream of declarations to achieve Net Zero. But what does that actually mean to the built environment? Do we really know how to design and deliver a true net-zero building? This masterclass will explore the issues around net zero, providing practical illustrations of what it takes to achieve both net-zero operational energy and net-zero embodied energy and highlighting what can be done at design stage to achieve the biggest impact. The class will also explain how Passivhaus Classic, Plus and Premium can be used to support a net-zero design.
This masterclass will be of interest to architects and consultants who want to be able to explain to clients how to achieve a zero carbon building in practice and who wish to understand why many low-energy eco-homes are actually far from net zero.

This session will look at how to achieve a real net-zero building. It will compare Passivhaus with the UK Building Regulations standard and explain why the Passivhaus approach offers a better mechanism for achieving net-zero. It will cover the use of renewables and how both Passivhaus Plus and Passivhaus Premium relate to net-zero. This session will draw on the research paper from the Passivhaus Trust.

13:30 - 15:00: Net Zero Embodied, Kirsten Henson, KLH Sustainability
This session will look at the way in which the embodied energy of a building can be assessed. It will focus on which design decisions have the biggest impact on embodied energy and also provide some context to explain that the materials/equipment critical to Passivhaus (e.g. insulation, glazing and MVHR) account for a very small element of the embodied energy.

15:30 - 16:00: PHribbon Demo
This session introduces the functions of the PHribbon tool developed to work with PHPP (version 9.1, 9.3 or 9.6). The toolbar in Excel is modular for ease of use and flexibility.
16:00 - 17:00 : Workshop session
This session will draw together the key issues from both the operational and embodied carbon sessions in the form of a real world case study. Delegates will be taken through the project and will be asked to suggest potential design changes to reduce carbon. The final ‘net zero’ design will then be revealed and each suggested design modification evaluated in terms of effectiveness.
