Stores Phase Out Flame Retardant Furniture - Chemicals Linked to Cancer, Obesity and Low IQ
Posted by: Stella Ng'oma // Green building enthusiast
Stores are phasing out flame retardant furniture as 97% of Americans are said to be living with toxic chemicals in their bodies.
It is shocking to learn that most of the furniture that has been used for decades consists of toxic flame retardant chemicals that are hazardous to human health. Chemicals used in these flame retardant furniture are said to be linked to cancer, obesity and low IQ in children. In a recent news article published by KGW.com, Jennifer Coleman of Oregon Environmental Council states that about 97% of Americans live with the hazardous chemicals in their bodies. It is however pleasing to note that recent legal changes allow furniture stores to meet flammability requirements without using these toxic chemicals. Such stores that have taken the lead include Ashley Furniture, Crate and Barrel and recently Macy's.
