Event Description
UMass Boston University Hall Building Tour by USGBC MA - October 20
Thursday, October 20, 6-8:30pm
University of Massachusetts Boston
100 Morrissey Boulevard
Boston, MA 02125
Join green building colleagues for a tour of the University of Massachusetts Boston’s new University Hall. Located at the eastern edge of campus, the four story building accommodates academic space needs, enhances campus and student life, and serves a large cross-representation of students, faculty, and staff. In support of UMass Boston’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the design of University Hall incorporates several innovative sustainable features focusing on energy use reduction. The intent is for the facility to operate at 25% lower energy use than a baseline building and will achieve 105 kBtu/sf/yr. University Hall is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, and is currently tracking LEED Gold.
Key sustainable features include:
-High performance exterior envelope and glazing system
-Cantilevered roof shades the southeast-facing glazed wall at the atrium to balance aesthetics and user comfort
-LED theatrical lights to reduce electrical load by 84 KW and the associated cooling load by 24 tons/year
-Reduced lighting power density (20% better than code)
-Heat recovery for lab space (run-around loop)
-"Cascade Economizer” control for lab ventilation
-Reduced ventilation during unoccupied hours
The building is a part of the first phase of the University’s 25-year campus master plan which was developed to transform the campus into a cutting edge, sustainable, and attractive environment. The Master Plan identifies these new and renewed facilities to inspire and connect students, faculty, and staff with the University’s local, national, and global communities and to bolster ties with surrounding neighbors. The intent of the Master Plan is to re-center and reorganize the Campus space to create a more vibrant and engaging University community.
Event Sponsor: Pare Corporation.
Designer Wilson Architects will lead the tour of the facility. And special thanks to our Emerging Professionals committee for coordinating the event. Chapter members, who are connected to the project, from Pare Corporation and Wilson Architects will be on hand to help answer questions.
