New Strategies for High Performance Affordable Homes

An ongoing challenge in sustainable building has been to bring beautiful, high energy performance homes into a more reasonable price range. Using simplified, reproducible designs and limiting portfolio options, we look at how two local home builders take on the challenge of bringing more of these homes into the mainstream.

Join us at Platform Sports Bar from 5-7pm on Wednesday March 14th to learn from two builders influenced by the principles of passive house and net zero homes, Kent Hicks will share his new venture, East Branch Homes and Andrew Dey will talk about Unity Homes and their new production facility in Keene, New Hampshire.

    • Featured Presenters for March:

Andrew Dey, Director of Operations for Unity Homes, has thirty years of experience in construction including carpentry, general contracting, consulting, teaching and writing. Andrew recently spent a year in Germany researching and writing about that country’s Energy Transition. When he returned, Andrew joined the team at Unity Homes in Walpole, NH, where he is inspired and challenged by the company’s mission to lower the cost of high performance homes.

Kent Hicks, Owner of Kent Hicks Construction and Certified Passive House Consultant, came to Western Massachusetts from the Oklahoma Panhandle in 1980 to study with acclaimed British furniture-maker, David Powell. After mastering the art of fine furniture making, he moved on to build and renovate residential and commercial properties. Today, his portfolio includes hundreds of beautiful, energy efficient new and renovated homes, as well as authentic historic restorations. Kent’s commitment to mitigating climate change and passion to learn the best practices in building science have made him an innovative leader in the construction of high-performance buildings. Kent’s search for the most responsible way to build led him to Passivhaus design, a standard that combines rigorous energy efficiency specifications with comfort and precision engineering.
