Designed as a teaching tool for the Taft School, a boarding school in Watertown, CT., this single family two-story, 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home is a terrific example of a home designed to meet historic district guidelines and the passive house standard (PHIUS). This home is oriented to optimize the use of passive and active solar energy. Energy usage will be monitored by the residents at an integrated iPad screen and by the Environmental Science students in the classroom. The design, high performance and purpose of this home as a model of sustainable green building solutions is so notable, it has won many awards including national recognition as the 2015 Housing Innovation Awards Grand Winner.
