Event Description

In this class they will focus on practical tools and techniques that can be used to identify and assess retrocommissioning opportunities in existing buildings. These techniques can also be applied to troubleshooting during new construction commissioning and day-to-day operations. In addition, the lessons learned can provide valuable input for the design-phase commissioning process.  All of the techniques discussed will be practical, proven approaches used by experienced practitioners in the field on a daily basis and will be illustrated with examples from actual projects.  

The class is structured around the 10 Key Skills required for the technical work associated with retrocommissioning. An overview of the skills and why they matter can be found here and they include the ability to benchmark and perform utility analysis, the ability to scope a facility, familiarity with HVAC and physics fundamentals, the ability to apply the system concept, the ability to perform data logging and trend analysis, familiarity with functional testing, data analysis, energy calculations, and cost benefit techniques and developing a competency with control systems. 

This RCx101 class is a pre-requisite for anyone interested in attending the PEC's year-long, 14-session Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) Workshop Series that begins on April 20th. This year-long series is designed to upskill individuals interested in performing commissioning at existing commercial building facilities. There are many details related to this training series.

The RCX101 class will also include interactive exercises, including the use of 3D models of a central plant and the HVAC systems it serves to illustrate the application of the techniques discussed in the class. Through the application of these exercises, They will illustrate how information gleaned early-on can be used to guide the commissioning process through implementation, including savings estimates and testing techniques. These discussions will also cover fundamental concepts related to the focus equipment or system. 

Commissioning providers will find the class useful as a way to expand their commissioning tool set. Building owners, operators, and others associated with facility operations will find the techniques useful for application in their day-to-day operation, troubleshooting, and continuous commissioning processes. Program managers and others involved on the periphery of the commissioning process may find that the class, while technical in nature, provides some insight and exposure to the nuts and bolts of the technical field work associated with the commissioning process.
