Free Webinar: Fundamentals of Lighting (IES) - Mod 1: Introduction to Light and Lighting
Event Description

The newly revised IES (Illuminating Engineering Society) Fundamentals of Lighting series is a great technical introduction for those entering lighting and related fields, including designers, salespeople, energy specialists, contractors, and specifiers. This ten-part, webinar series is held on consecutive Wednesday evenings this fall.

Each approximately two-and-a-half-hour module covers a different lighting topic and is taught by an industry professional. Topics include properties of light; lighting metrics; light and color; daylighting; lighting equipment including light sources, fixtures and controls; calculations; codes and standards; regulating lighting; and interior and exterior lighting applications. The ten classes are offered as a series but may be taken individually.

In Module 1: Introduction to Light and Lighting, we cover the development of lighting sources over time and how electric lighting became an industry. We briefly introduce lighting practice and walk through the steps in the process of design. We cover the physics of light, vision and visibility, color and spectral power, additive and subtractive color theory, color terminology, circadian rhythms and light and health.

The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify highpoints in the history of light and lighting and the role of the lighting designer in the building design process
  • Describe the properties of light
  • Analyze how the human visual system processes light and color, engendering positive emotional and physical responses
  • Identify important effects of light on human health that promote physical well-being
