Event Description
On average windows makeup to 15-20% of the surface area of walls in new and existing homes. In California, windows can account for up to 45% of cooling loads. Selecting the right windows can substantially increase comfort and reduce energy costs. In fact, selecting the right window technology can double your walls' total R-value!
Window technologies have changed considerably in recent years. These products can save up to 25% on heating costs and up to 40% on cooling costs but using the wrong window technology in the wrong climate can increase energy costs. Sorting out all the options and variables can be very confusing. Windows are also critical components to Passive House performance and this class will explain Passive House windows and the performance differences.
The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:
- Energy losses and gains in homes through the window assembly
- New Vacuum insulated glass technology with R-values of 14 and SHGC of .18
- The impact high performance windows can have on comfort
- Terms, definitions and window labeling such as: U and R values, solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC) shading coefficient (SC), visible light transmission (VLT) and the NFRC label etc
- How low-e and multiple or spectrally selective low-e coatings work -- what products work best in cold, warm and combination climates
- Explain how low conductivity frames can reduce energy loss by reducing condensation and related mold/mildew problems
- Understanding “warm edge spacer technologies”
- An explanation of short and long wave radiation, the electromagnetic spectrum and impact on building design/window design and fading
- Window air spaces and gases -- the relationship between air space, value of gasses and R-value
Steve Easley is an internationally recognized construction consultant specializing in solving building science related problems and educating building industry professionals. His work focuses on increasing quality of construction, sustainability, and reducing costly mistakes that lead to construction defects and call backs. Steve is a frequently requested speaker because of his practical approach to building science. He is known for his dynamic speaking style and his unique ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms that can be easily integrated into practice. Steve has hosted hundreds of best practice building science videos, including the California Energy Commission's Measured Home Performance videos which can be viewed HERE. He has also co-hosted hundreds of television and radio programs, including over 100 shows on the Discovery Channel's Your New House.
