Green Building Tour: Phased Construction: Affordable, Supportive Housing Development in Brooklyn, NY, August 23, 1-5 pm
Event Description
Join NESEA for a summer Pro Tour of an integrated, mixed-use, phased development project encompassing nearly a full city block in Brooklyn, NY. This project, which will include four buildings when complete, provides an example of phased construction using common-sense sustainability measures for an underserved population.
This event will begin with an opening presentation from the hosting team at Curtis + Ginsberg Architects, which will give attendees background on developing the master plan for the site, trauma-informed design strategies, zoning process, the phased build of the development, and the overall approach to meeting client sustainability goals. After the opening presentation, we'll split into groups to hear from the professionals behind the project, who will share their specific work. After the tour, we'll host a reception and Q&A with the team.
The group will be touring the two buildings that make up Phase 1 of the development. This includes a new supportive housing building of 184 units for formerly unhoused families with on-site support/counseling and medical spaces and for the residents, along with additional common spaces. There will also be another new supportive housing building of 71 units, built with on-site support offices and common space for youth programming.
All buildings incorporate highly insulated and thermally broken envelopes, ERVs, electric heating and cooling, and HVAC systems, as well as rooftop solar PV systems. Phase 2, currently starting construction, will provide the third supportive housing building of 79 units with on-site support-service offices and an extensive solar array. Attendees will also learn about the plans for Phases 3 and 4 during the tour, which will include Passive House-certified buildings.
If you are interested in projects that combine master-planning, complex phased construction with affordable housing, communal open space, and innovative energy and sustainability goals, this is the Pro Tour for you. Join us!
