Lighting Fundamentals, Parts I, II and III, Free and Online, September 12, 13, and 14, 9 - 11:30 am PST
Event Description
This 3-class series provides a basic overview of fundamental lighting topics, including lighting terminology, vision, light and color theory, electric light sources, fixtures, controls, as well as introductions to lighting calculations and to codes and standards. Lighting designer David Orgish provides examples to demonstrate human visual response, color characteristics, light measurement and the lighting design process. Attendees are introduced to several fixture types and characteristics of LED systems. Lighting codes and recommendations as well as some energy-saving concepts are introduced.
In Part 1 – Terminology, Vision and Color, the class will cover definitions of key lighting terms and how light is processed in human vision with a brief mention of light and health effects. We explore how light interacts with surfaces to produce color, and review specularity and glare. David demonstrates various color temperatures and color rendering capabilities to evaluate and compare their effects.
Agenda:
In Part 2 – Light Sources, Luminaire and Controls, the course will review legacy light source types, then take a deep dive into LED lighting systems and how they operate. This class covers auxiliary equipment, such as drivers, and introduces lighting controls and how they function.
Agenda:
In Part 3, the class will address lighting calculations that are typically done to predict illuminance levels. The class introduces examples of calculation software used today and their reporting capabilities. We also review lighting codes and standards, and major lighting issues today.
Agenda:
David Orgish is a Principal of the lighting design studio of O’Mahony & Myer. O'Mahony & Myer is one of the few electrical engineering firms with a fully-staffed, professional lighting design studio. In addition to being involved in all project stages, from proposals to construction administration, David Orgish has also designed and manufactured his own custom luminaires through a San Francisco-based furniture showroom. David was also a manufacturer's Specification Representative, Product Design Manager, and Western Regional Sales Manager for three different international luminaire manufacturers, which gives him a unique perspective on the issues confronted in designing LED luminaires and illumination systems for buildings and their surroundings as well as the procurement and distribution of lighting products.
