Event Description
High performance buildings often have complex, interrelated systems that require skilled facility managers who can balance the requirements of end-users with the demands of running the building efficiently.
However, design and construction teams often hand off projects to the facilities team without providing adequate preparation or incorporating their input. This can lead to buildings that don’t operate as efficiently as their designers intended. This session will demonstrate examples of system inefficiencies from Facilities Managers’ perspective and explore opportunities during the planning, design and turnover processes that could encourage more efficient operations.

Principal, Kohler Ronan
Santillan has designed mechanical systems for large institutions, universities, commercial spaces, and residences — both in urban and rural areas. She brings substantial industry experience, attention to detail, operational skills, and creative talent to all projects. Since joining Kohler Ronan’s New York office, Santillan has proven herself to be extremely engaging and to possess unparalleled interpersonal skills. She is able to explain the most complicated engineering topics in the simplest of terms. Her skills have allowed her to successfully complete projects while mentoring several of our younger engineers. As project manager, Santillan coordinates between disciplines and ensures that schedules and budgets are being met.
Director of Facilities, The Buckley School
Neil Martinez is the Director of Facilities for The Buckley School, an independent, K-9 day school for boys located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Neil oversees all aspects of facilities management for the school's three properties, one of which achieved LEED for Schools v2009 Silver Certification. Neil received his Bachelors in Finance from Pace University and is also a Certified Building Commissioning Professional.
Mark Gordon
Facilities Director, Collegiate School
Mark Gordon has been in the facilities maintenance business for 40 years and has been on both sides, as a provider and now a facilities manager. Mark is a Florida state certified electrical contractor as well as a building inspector. He presently is the facilities Director for Collegiate School, an all-boys K-12 school founded in 1628 in New Amsterdam, the oldest school in this country. Mark with his colleagues moved the entire school last winter holiday break to their new location on the Upper west Side near the Hudson River.
