Event Description

The use of compost and mulch is required by two converging California regulations: the Modified Water Efficiency Landscape Ordinance (MWELO) and California Senate Bill (SB 1383). Applying compost and mulch is also a critical cultural practice in landscaping that produces water savings. California jurisdictions are now required to purchase specific volumes of compost and mulch to meet the requirements of SB 1383, however, many of them do not know how to choose the correct products. Further, some agencies are not enforcing the requirements of MWELO. In both cases, professional landscapers, landscape architects, and other stakeholders will be expected to assist their government (and potentially, other) clients meet these important environmental regulations.

The workshop will explain how to better choose SB 1383-eligible and appropriate water-saving products. The training will include: 

• An explanation of the MWELO and SB 1383 nexus and the compost and mulch requirements included in these regulations.
• An Illustration of how best to recognize, locate, specify, and purchase compost and mulch products. This will include a product show & tell where sample products can be assessed and appreciated. We will also distribute example specifications for compost and mulch.
• A discussion of specific applications for different types of compost and mulch, including a sheet mulching demonstration. A review of compost test data sheets will be included.

Training will benefit government employees working to implement MWELO and SB 1383, landscape architects, landscape contractors, facility and landscape operations staff, and residential gardeners.
