Event Description
Big Deals: Visionary Responses to Climate Change in NYC
Wednesday, February 8, 2017, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
The Center for Architecture,
536 LaGuardia Place, NY, 10012.
Addressing climate change calls for incredible creativity. Two major projects are being explored here in New York City: a storm barrier called The Dryline (BIG U) and the establishment of a Climate Museum. The BIG U designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group addresses NYC’s vulnerability to coastal flooding with a protective ribbon in Southern Manhattan. The 12-kilometer-long infrastructural barrier incorporates public space into the high-water barrier, cleverly disguised as skate parks, public pools, urban farms, bird sanctuaries, and marshland trails. The Climate Museum aims to educate the public about the realities of climate change, dissect climate issues and solutions, and serve as a public forum to learn about climate change, share solutions, and commit to change. Employing the sciences, art, and design, the Climate Museum seeks to inspire dialogue and innovations that address the challenges of climate change and catalyze broad community engagement.
