The Wildfire Defense Certificate for Landscape Professionals is a 150-minute training followed by an online assessment. This certificate training provides participants with real-world examples and strategies for fire risk reduction, including but not limited to the following topics:

  • Understanding Wildfire
  • Think Home First
  • Defensible Space Zones
  • Hardscape Strategies
  • Defensible Landscape Design
  • Strategic Tree Canopy
  • Fire Risk Reducing Maintenance
  • Post-Fire Recovery
  • Importance of community organizing for safety, preparedness, and funding opportunities

      Stuart Mitchell is a NFPA Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist, serving North Bay communities in that role since 2019. Previously he was a FEMA Crisis Counselor for the 2017 Sonoma Firestorm, where he learned what residents and First Responders cope with during a natural disaster, and how they can prepare for a changing climate. Stuart is passionate about educating people on prioritized factors that can reduce risk to lives, property, and the environment. As owner of Wildfire Mitigation Advisors, Stuart has conducted nearly 1000 on the ground wildfire risk assessments on various properties including HOAs, commercial businesses, and remote homes in Very High Fire Severity Zones.

      Eric Schoohs

      Eric Schoohs is a leader in the North Bay stewardship community and is passionate about empowering people to form a relationship with the land. He is an associate professor at the Santa Rosa Junior College in the Adult and Continuing Education Program focusing on Fire Resilient Landscaping. He is co-editor of the website Tending the Land for Fire Resilience in Sonoma County. Eric manages a breadth of land stewardship projects including landowner and professional trainings, planning and supervision field crews in restoration and trail projects, and proposal development and management.
