Free Webinar: Fundamentals of Lighting (IES) - Mod 3: Daylighting - Part of a 10 art series
Event Description

The newly revised IES (Illuminating Engineering Society) Fundamentals of Lighting series is a great technical introduction for those entering lighting and related fields, including designers, salespeople, energy specialists, contractors, and specifiers. This ten-part webinar series is held on consecutive Wednesday evenings this fall.

Each approximately two-and-a-half-hour module covers a different lighting topic and is taught by an industry professional. Topics include properties of light; lighting metrics; light and color; daylighting; lighting equipment including light sources, fixtures and controls; calculations; codes and standards; regulating lighting; and interior and exterior lighting applications. The ten classes are offered as a series but may be taken individually.

In Module 3: Daylighting, we explain how daylight is characterized and the means of daylight delivery into buildings alongside descriptions of architectural features and window types for capturing it. We cover daylight harvesting, controls, integration with electric light, and modeling daylight using defined metrics. We discuss some of the psychological and productivity benefits of daylight and view some of the challenges managing daylight in a building design.

The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics of daylight
  • Identify the primary methods of delivering and distributing daylight
  • Analyze the basic metrics of daylight illuminance
  • Compare approaches to integrating daylight and electric lighting
