Every organization and everyone can submit to Rate It Green's green building calendar! Simply click register, verify your email address, and create a username and password. You can then decide if you'd like to engage more fully as a community member, but you'll be able to post events.

Event Description
Sustainable design is a fundamental part of our lighting industry. As part of the design process, they aim to reduce the usage of energy and to reduce the wasteful impact on the environment we live in. A sustainable design should strive to optimize the economic, environmental, and social benefits as much as possible.
Artificial lighting can account for up to 15% of a building's annual electricity use. The goal for current sustainable lighting technology is to minimize the need for artificial lighting and decrease energy usage in buildings. Innovation that connects light and people and that delivers light beyond illumination is the right path to sustainability.
The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:
- How to embed sustainability in the design process
- How to upgrade lighting systems for better lighting and energy savings in commercial buildings
- Incorporating sustainable practices and benefitting from daylighting in your design
- Understanding electrical components
- Specifying products and layouts to ensure long-term financial benefits and effective light levels and features
- Creating code-compliant solutions that control light in unwanted areas and minimize the harmful impact of trespassing light
- Making use of lighting controls and commissioning for energy savings and intended functionality
- Define sustainable practices in lighting
Sima Tawakoli received a Masters degree in Architecture and Urban Design and a Masters in Design and Industry. She is currently is working as an application designer at 16500. In the past, she has worked as an architect and designer at various design and architectural firms. For her, lighting design is another creative process. “It’s like painting, but space becomes the canvas on which we are designing!”. Sima is the past President of IES San Francisco Section and she has taught various IES classes over the past few years. She is also an active member of IALD, IES and OWA.
