Free Webinar: Transportation Electrification and its Impacts on the Built Environment - Part 1
Event Description

Part I, June 4:

This course describes how the push to electrify transportation can impact the grid. Participants will explore the impact of electric vehicles (EVs) on building operations and the potential cascade effect of charger installation and utilization on service and panel upgrades in neighborhood buildings. Participants will also explore ways that EVs can benefit the grid, examine relevant time of use (TOU) rate options, and survey incentives related to EV charging equipment. By the end of this course, learners will understand how residential and commercial buildings can better plan for EV charging.

Agenda:

  • The Why: Policies, pledges and pushes influencing EV Adoption
  • Overview of the impact of electrification on the built environment with a focus on EVs
  • Planning considerations for buildings

At the end of this class participants will be able to

  • Articulate the driving forces behind transportation electrification
  • Differentiate between the types of EVs and their environmental impact relative to each other and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles
  • Describe the power generation to consumption pathway as well as the impact of EVs on electricity generation and usage

Part 2, June 5:

This course describes how the push to electrify transportation can impact the grid. Participants will explore the impact of electric vehicles (EVs) on building operations and the potential cascade effect of charger installation and utilization on service and panel upgrades in neighborhood buildings. Participants will also explore ways that EVs can benefit the grid, examine relevant time of us (TOU) rate options, and survey incentives related to EV charging equipment. By the end of this course, learners will understand how residential and commercial buildings can better plan for EV charging.

Agenda:

  • Planning considerations for buildings (contd.)
  • Vehicle to Grid (V2G) - how EVs can benefit the grid
  • Explore successful EV fleet implementation.
  • Time of Use (TOU) rates, incentives and rebates

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this class participants will be able to

  • Describe the power generation to consumption pathway as well as the impact of EVs on electricity generation and usage
  • Compare and contrast vehicle range and technology
  • Explain bi-directional charging and how V2G technology can impact and stabilize the grid
  • Understand TOU rates as well as available incentives and rebates

Target Audience:

  • Architects and Designers
  • Planners
  • Building Operation Managers
  • EV owners
  • Utilities

Learning Level:
Basic Class: Content is introductory in nature and requires no prerequisite knowledge or experience to grasp the concepts or participate in exercises. Basic educational activities and materials are meant to establish a foundation of knowledge and competence that will be expanded upon in practice or in higher level seminars and workshops.
