The Start of Something Great? Green Mountain Power Prepares to Sell Tesla's Powerwall Battery to Homeowners this Fall
In an exciting home energy develoment, Green Mountain Power and Tesla have announced a plan for Green Mountain Power of Vermont to sell Tesla's Powerwall home battery to customers starting this October.
Offering a home back up battery makes tons of sense and is a win-win, allowing the energy company to reduce peak demand and giving homeowners some energy independence and risk reduction from energy events, and hopefully for all Green Mountain Energy clients to save money.
The news here is that Green Mountain Energy as a utility and energy company is willing to take this step for a new and currently still pretty expensive technology. It seems that this is an innovative and risky step which reveals a company willing to take a stand for core values and trying to work out the balance between profit and making our energy and environment cleaner for all.
Has Tesla solved the critical energy storage problem? (http://www.brinknews.com/has-tesla-cracked-the-grid-energy-storage-problem/) No, not really. But this is a promising an innovative start! And it's great that Green Mountain Power has stepped up. It seems that Tesla and Green Mountain are showing the kind of spirit we need to solve our energy problems in the long term. Companies must be willing to take chances and to innocate, and consumers must likewise show some demand, even when there's some risk and some in the crowd must be early adapters.

I look forward to hearing more as the first Green Mountain Power clients receive their Powerwalls!
The Tesla home battery can be paired with small-scale solar such as rooftop panels to store locally generated energy, or it can be used without solar as a battery to store power from the grid. During a storm or emergency, the battery is able to power essential parts of the home like lights, a refrigerator, and furnace. GMP will partner with customers to utilize the batteries during peak energy times to directly lower costs for customers by reducing transmission and capacity costs.
