Domes for North Lombok - Rebuilding after a Devastating Earthquake

On August 5th, a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck in North Lombok Indonesia, destroying over 50,00 homes and displacing over 350,000 people. Rate It Green Members DOME Lombok - Eco Village were safe in South Lombok, but the company has jumped into recovery efforts with passion. They and others are racing to provide as much shelter as possible before the rainy season hits in another month or so. Due to the destruction and partly also out of fear of aftershocks and additional earthquakes, residents are largely living in tents which will not provide sufficient shelter in the heavy monsoon rains. The DOME Lombok team is working to build some dome housing and are teaching residents how to build, as well as providing the materials needed to rebuild. Dome housing is one of the most earthquake resistant forms of housing and can be built for approximately 500 US dollars. Dome features include:
 

• Strong structure - highly earthquake, flood and fire resistant
• Quick to build – a team of 5-10 workers can complete the basic structure within 2 weeks
• Communities can learn how to build their own homes
• Materials needed are easy to source and are not expensive
