Position Summary:

NeighborWorks launched the Healthy Homes and Communities Initiative in 2014 to advance efforts at the nexus of health, housing and community development. Through this initiative, NeighborWorks is focused on several key areas including (1) promoting high-quality, stable housing with services as foundation of health; (2) advancing community-led solutions to address health disparities and inequities; and (3) supporting systems-level approaches that increase and deepen partnerships and investment across sectors. The Director, Healthy Homes and Communities leads NeighborWorks America’s efforts to promote health as a core focus and outcome of comprehensive community development. This includes:

• Promoting social determinants of health frameworks
• Embedding health equity as a core focus across NeighborWorks programs and services
• Fostering national cross-sector partnerships to support local partnerships and systems integration
• Incubating, evaluating and disseminating promising models across the NeighborWorks network
• Designing and leading capacity building efforts to support effective practices
• Identifying and promoting funding models that increase the sustainability, scale and impact of local efforts
• Supporting efforts that measure the health outcomes of housing and community development activities
• Raising the visibility of community-based strategies to improve health and well-being

The Director, Healthy Homes and Communities plays a key role in translating, bridging and building relationships across health, community development and other sectors to assist NeighborWorks America and the NeighborWorks network in addressing the root causes of health disparities, promoting health equity, and improving lives for individuals, families and communities. The Director a mission-driven leader who collaborates with colleagues across NeighborWorks, the network and broader field to embed a focus on health. The Director reports to the Vice President of Community Initiatives and may supervise staff on future projects.

NOTE: Preference is for the selected candidate to work out of our Washington, DC office; consideration will also be given for NeighborWorks regional office locations (Atlanta, Boston, New York, Kansas City, Denver or Los Angeles) or remote status.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Lead planning efforts to identify opportunities for NeighborWorks to advance work at the nexus of health, housing and community development.
• Leverage knowledge of the health sector (in addition to other sectors) to identify opportunities for NeighborWorks and the network to serve as valued partners in addressing health disparities.
• Raise the visibility of the vital role of housing and community development in improving health outcomes through research, publications and presentations.
• Provide subject matter expertise, technical assistance, peer-to-peer learning, tools and training that assist NeighborWorks organizations in developing and deepening partnerships with the health sector.
• Support peer learning opportunities to accelerate the adoption of promising health, housing and community development models across the NeighborWorks network.
• Develop new and strengthen existing partnerships with national intermediaries, funders, health and community development organizations and other cross-sector partners to share and leverage resources, facilitate local partnerships, broaden knowledge of effective strategies, and contribute to field-level change.
• Identify, support and disseminate funding models that increase the scale and sustainability of health, housing and community development efforts.
• Assist in efforts to measure, document and communicate the results of housing, health and community development activities.
• Apply a racial equity lens to NeighborWorks’ health, housing and community development efforts to ensure programs and resources benefit historically marginalized communities.
• Represent NeighborWorks America as the lead spokesperson on the topic of health, housing and community development, in addition to serving on taskforces and workgroups.
• Serve as a member on the Community Initiatives leadership team and support the development and implementation of departmental and divisional strategic priorities and programs.
• Oversee workplan and budget development and execution for the Health Homes and Communities Initiative.
• Stay up-to-date on trends, challenges and opportunities that affect local and national efforts aimed at promoting health equity.
• Other job-related duties as assigned.

Nature of Work Contacts:
The Director, Healthy Homes and Communities will interact with a diverse group of NeighborWorks staff, NeighborWorks network members, community residents, consultants, external partners, funders, and other stakeholders from within and outside NeighborWorks America.

Fiscal Responsibilities:
The Director will be responsible for managing program budgets, grantmaking processes and procurement activities.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required Minimum Qualifications:

(a) Education: A bachelor’s degree is required; a graduate degree in a related field (e.g. public health, health administration, public policy, urban planning, or nonprofit management) is preferred. Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

(b) Experience: At least seven (7) years of professional experience working to develop, implement, promote and evaluate efforts aimed at improving health outcomes for individuals and communities. Direct experience with health and/or community development organizations working at the nexus of health, housing and community development is preferred.

(d) Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Passion for and dedication to addressing health disparities and inequities through community-led efforts.
• In-depth knowledge and understanding of the health sector, social determinants of health frameworks, and affordable housing and comprehensive community development principles.
• Demonstrated commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Experience translating, bridging and developing partnerships across sectors to develop shared goals, implement new strategies and leverage additional resources.
• Ability to serve as an internal and external subject matter expert and though leader on issues related to health, housing and community development.
• Familiarity with funding models that support the sustainability and growth of community-based health efforts.
• Demonstrated project management experience, including independent management of project goals, budgets and timelines as well as coordinating with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders to implement project plans.
• Experience developing and deploying technical assistance, peer learning, tools and training to spread knowledge and adoption of promising practices.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience developing reports, publications and presentations to promote new ideas and share best practices.
• Accomplishments that reflect teamwork, integrity, effectiveness, and efficiency – including demonstrated leadership, ability to influence and bring about consensus, and to work independently.
• Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others and successfully interact with people at all management and support levels, as well as people of diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
A graduate degree in public health, public policy, urban planning, nonprofit management or other related field is preferred.

Working Conditions:
(a) Travel: Up to 25 percent required.
