DONG Energy Announces Plans for a Massachusetts Offshore Wind Farm
Posted by: Allison Friedman // Rate It Green Admin
According to the Boston Globe, global wind developer DONG Energy is proposing the largest offshore wind farm in America, south of Martha's Vineyard. The firm could be planning as many as 100 wind turbines in an area further out to sea than the ill-fated Cape Wind project. The project may face significantly less opposition, as the turbines will be much less visible from shore. Additionally, DONG Energy is apparently planning to self-finance the project, which reduces a potential project risk. Current risks include the permitting process itself, wildlife concerns, and a DONG Eeergy requirement regarding long-term contracts for wind, hydro electricity, and other sources of clean energy Nearby wind projects are also in the works in adjacent water by Deepwater Wind and OffshoreMW.
