Came across this website the other day. There is all sorts of information on starting a social enterprise, which basically means a business with a focus on sustainability and social justice but ran like a for profit business. Think something like equal exchange or other fair trade businesses. They are headquartered out of Halifax NS. Originally, I read an article about Common Good Solutions, which is a consultancy for social enterprises and nonprofits. What is really good about both sites is that there is lots of information that is readily available! Particularly, the Social Enterprise website even has online classes you can take that helps you along the way of starting out and where you may be able to find a niche. There are other courses which are not free, but prices are very reasonable ( around $100).

See for yourself.

Social Enterprise Greenhouse (SEG) in Providence, Rhode Island, is also a terrific resource, with workshops, a super annual summit, and an accelerator program with small, focused cohorts.
