Event Description
A stable climate demands that buildings radically reduce their carbon footprint and move toward carbon neutrality by 2050. Electrification, advancements in efficient decarbonized building systems and acceleration towards a clean grid put zero operational carbon within sight.
This session will describe legitimate pathways toward radical embodied carbon reduction available now, and will explore other sources of carbon emissions that must be tackled to bring us to a fully zero-emission built environment. A broad range of actors including a sustainability specialist, academic researcher, architect, and a structural engineer/developer will contribute to this discussion. They will share different ways to approach this challenge, what targets make sense, how to understand carbon offsets and variations between them, and what would it mean to target "absolute zero carbon" in the timeframe needed.
This session will cover current issues faced by the industry including, for example, the conditions under which carbon offsets legitimate, key barriers to be overcome, and existing tools exist to effectively set baselines, targets, and strategies on embodied carbon. After presentations by all speakers, the moderator will lead a discussion on what sustainability leaders need to do today for the entire industry to get to zero embodied carbon by 2050.

- An overview of the fundamentals behind zero embodied carbon and carbon offsets, and how the principles ensuring net-reductions of emissions relate to life cycle assessment
- The concept of 'absolute zero carbon' and six steps to get to zero with a special focus on co-benefits of biodiversity and environmental justice
- An architectural perspective on designing zero carbon buildings, with a case study to demonstrate how a free software tool can establish a roadmap to zero carbon
- A developer perspective of an adaptive reuse project using innovative lower carbon building materials and circular economy development techniques
- Panel discussion and general Q&A

Matt Roberts, PhD
Matt Roberts is a postdoctoral scholar at the Center for the Built Environment at UC Berkeley. Matt’s research efforts focus on the advancement of life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology for material to building scale applications within the built environment.
