Window Selection for New and Existing Homes
Event Description

On average windows makeup to 15-20% of the surface area of walls in new and existing homes. In California, windows can account for up to 45% of cooling loads. Selecting the right windows can substantially increase comfort and reduce energy costs. In fact, selecting the right window technology can double your walls' total R-value!

Window technologies have changed considerably in recent years. These products can save up to 25% on heating costs and up to 40% on cooling costs but using the wrong window technology in the wrong climate can increase energy costs. Sorting out all the options and variables can be very confusing. Windows are also critical components to Passive House performance and this class will explain Passive House windows and the performance differences.

The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and select the most appropriate window technology for a given climate
  • Summarize the tremendous impact windows can have on comfort
  • Explain the terms on the NFRC label
  • Detail how low-E coatings work
  • Select frames, spacers and gas fills
