Doing the right thing is also doing good work for our community. The outcome of better connected communities and less impact to the planet speaks to power through action. There is no barrier to making the right choices, only having someone else subsidize them. So, if the right choices are good for business, I ask, why wait?

I think we need to be clear, as a community, on how we define our terms so we can welcome people into the sustainability movement. Thank you for deepening the conversation.

This week I’m at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, watching and learning as over 3,000 teens from about 82 countries share research and innovative ideas that could change our world - inspiring stuff. There are so many young women at this event. I’m thinking about the opportunities that await those who want...

Snapshot on Sustainability: A Library is far more than its books in circulation
Although the smart phone sitting in my pocket can help me find the answer to most any question, I don’t think of my phone as the intersection of technology and learning, but simply a tool that I use more often than I’d like to admit. However, a library is truly that space – that intersection – and more. I think of a library not only of the...

USGBC-LA Blog post - Independence
As the July 4th weekend draws near, thoughts of BBQs and fireworks fill my mind and I wonder (maybe a little too often) why the smell of a BBQ makes me hungry, no matter how long ago I ate. I remember past fireworks shows and how my eyes ache for the spectacle while my body recoils from the vibration of each explosion. These are, after all,...

USGBC-LA's blog from Beatrice Ungard, titled "What is your City's or Neighborhood's Vocation?"
"The idea that a city or a neighborhood has a vocation may sound strange as the concept is usually applied to humans, not places. Yet, the notion of a place's vocation begins to make sense when you think of a place as a socio-ecological system that has the properties of a living system."... to read more, visit www.usgbc-la.org/blog
