Comment about Quality/Durability: Water and fire resistant
I've known these guys for years and have only heard good things about their company. I have seen their installations on commercial projects and am impressed with what the product can do. It not comes in many colors other than bright white making it more versatile. I've known these guys for years and have only heard good things about their company. Electric Vehicles need to be powered by Solar (not Coal) to be green
Electric Vehicles are NOT sustainable. The argument that Electric Vehicles are not sustainable is only partly true. Depending on where you live, they can be powered by electricity created by fossil fuels. However, that is a lazy argument regurgitated from propaganda created by fossil fuel companies. You can easily add solar to your home or business and have net-zero energy vehicles. They know this...

Several years ago, when the term "perfect wall" was mentioned, I thought it meant a "plumb and square" wall. Many of us green builders and architects throw around the term as if everyone understands it. Most builders and architects barely understand it. While I was at the 2022 International Builders Show this year, the high-performance stage had a sample of some of the projects that we currently use to make...

Your House May be Making You Sick!
I got questions from a YouTube video regarding ventilation in their home. They also wanted to ventilate their detached art studio. They indicated that they would be sick inside the house during certain times of the year in their new house, so I created this video to help out. Issues with the main house My first recommendation was to find the source of the toxins in their home. They already had a respiratory illness so...

What is the ideal humidity needed to help maintain hardwood flooring?
I got a question from a webinar that I co-hosted with Aprilaire and the National Wood Flooring Association. The question related to 'what is needed to maintain a good relative humidity to help preserve a maple wood floor.' One of the co-hosts, Brett Miller, answered from the perspective of the wood flooring industry: "...you will need to try and maintain a consistent temp and RH from season to season. The temp should be...

Our Path to Choosing Green Building Certifications: A Passive House and Earthcraft Home Renovation
Our video conversation above, part of the full "Behind the Walls" webinar playlist, shows how the Passive House Standard far exceeds basic energy codes. When we first started the design process on the #1920sMakeoverATL, a deep energy retrofit of a charming 1920's home in the Ansley Park area of Atlanta, we were not thinking about making this house a Passive House because the only planned improvements were on...

Common Framing Problems with Older Homes can Lead to High Energy Bills
I've heard that "They Don't Build Them Like the Used To..." This may be a good thing for some things like furniture, however when it comes to the structure of an old house, thank goodness we have made progress. Framing Inspection Shows Multiple Fails in the Existing Structure #1920sMakeoverATL Progress Update: I inspected the #1920sMakeoverATL learning house to see what we were working...

"Gas vs Electricity" Misperceptions Still Tipping the Scales?
Many Americans Still Think All-Electric means sacrificing performance. As an owner of a premium [design + build] firm, I get asked which products are best for my client's house based on performance, efficiency, price, and safety. I've done the research, and I share it with my clients and also on my blog and YouTube channel. You may have also seen some of the videos I've created for Rate It Green members...

What green cleaning products do you use in your house?
The CDC came out with a report for 2020 Q1 showing that poison control calls were uo by 20% for cleaners and dissinfectants. We all know that bleach can kill about anything including us. With COVID19 out there still I can imagine people are still trying to kill the virus to protect their families and businesses. Unfortunately, the wrong products can cause more harm than good. What green cleaning solutions do you use in your...

Demystifying Ventilation and Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs)
I was talking to a friend about ERV’s recently and they had a puzzled look on their face when I kept mentioning that I wanted to put an E.R.V. in my house. I realized that they did not know what ERV stood for and they thought I was referring to an RV. An ERV is an “Energy Recovery Ventilator” (which is much different from an RV which is a “Recreational Vehicle”...). To be fair, I barel...

The CDC, EPA and other agencies are giving us practical ways to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus such as social distancing and washing hands. While these are essential, there are additional steps you can take to improve indoor air quality. We took a look at some of these last week in a short video on how to design for situations like these , however the immediate feedback was “What can we do now?” So our team create...

The Forgotten Side of the Home
When you build a house, some parts are designed to be upgraded within a few years, and others after a few decades or even after one century. Kitchens and bathrooms get makeovers, but foundations typically are rebuilt until the house is torn down. While we renovated a 100-year-old house in Atlanta, Georgia, we discovered that the existing foundation and slab were poorly designed and a complete failure. We decided to renova...

It can be challenging for someone new to green building to gain proficiency or to understand how to approach this field and to figure out where or exactly how to begin a green building journey. At the same time, there is only so much informatio...

DIY Solar Power Fan Installation - Reduce Shed Heat and Stagnant Air
A solar powered fan is a great and simple idea to remove excess heat from a shed. And this is a Scout project in addition, where (with supervision), the kids can get involved and learn as well. Apparently this Scout shed sometimes reached 160 degrees F in the summer! Green Builder Matt Hoots explains the steps and shows us how it's done. Note that this fan can also be installed in place of a rectangular garage bay glass...

Smart Exhaust Controls - Sensors Improve Garage and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
"There are good garages and bad garages…” according to Green Builder Matt Hoots of Sawhorse, Inc. And in the good ones, we breathe better air! Matt reviews the benefits and and healthy air risks with attached and detached garages. The good news is that a ventilation fan can help remove the fumes we bring into garages when we park fossil-fuel powered vehicles inside a space that shares a wall with...

Automatic Bath Fan Sensors Reduce Humidity, Pollutants, and Odors
As Green Builder Matt Hoots of Sawhorse, Inc. points out, most people don’t use ventilation properly. Exhaust fans can be a missed opportunity for improving Indoor air quality, or IAQ, because so many people don’t turn them on, or they turn them off too soon. In the kitchen, excessively loud hoods are also less likely to be used. This means that cooking emissions are lingering in the air, and this problem is...

Rainstick Showers - Higher Water Pressure, Using 80% Less Water?
The Rainstick shower seems to offer the impossible, delivering high water pressure, while using a lot less water. If you’re concerned about lower water pressure, this product can deliver a better experience for you while still saving water. And if you take a longer shower, you no longer have to feel quite as guilty about wasting as much water and energy. In all seriousness, the Rainstick shower uses .5 gallons per...

Heat Pumps and Cold Weather - Q&A / Myth Busting
Some myths take a while to go away… Decades ago, Atlanta Green Builder Matt Hoots would likely have agreed that heat strips were often needed to help heat pumps keep up with heating demand in colder weather. Technology has since evolved, and this practice is no longer needed down to 20 degrees or even 0 or below, but with cold weather heat pumps. In this video, Matt addresses some persistent concerns about heat...

How Effective is ROCKWOOL Stone Wool Insulation Against Water?
What happens to ROCKWOOL stone mineral or stone wool insulation when it gets wet?
